South America stretches more than 7,500 kilometers from the warm Caribbean Sea almost to Antarctica. Waters from the eastern slopes of the Andes Mountains drain into mighty rivers, such as the Amazon, that traverse rain forests, grassy plains, and dry plateaus to eventually reach the Atlantic Ocean.

Image date: c. 2002

Part of the US Geological Survey’s "Earth as Art 2" collection of images taken by the Landsat 7 satellite, the ASTER instrument aboard the Terra satellite, and the MODIS instruments aboard the Terra and Aqua satellites.

Since 1972, Landsat satellites have collected from space information about Earth’s continents and coastal areas, enabling scientists to study many aspects of the planet and to evaluate changes caused by both natural processes and human practices. This image was created by visualizing both visible-light and infrared data in colors visible to the human eye; band combinations and colors were chosen to optimize their dramatic appearance.

South America: 100 km and 200 km Coastal Zones
South America

Coastal proximity zones (regions within 100 or 200 kilometers of a coast) were created from the GPWv3 shoreline vector layer. Global coastline features were subset into seven continental coverages (North America, South America, /Europe, Africa, Asia, Oceania and Australia), with each projected into a continent-specific Lambert Conformal Polyconic project. Buffers (100 km and 200 km) for each of the seven continental line coverages were created from the shorelines, and then clipped to include just the inland portions of the buffer zones. The resulting data layers were projected back into geographic space and merged, one each for 100km and 200km global coastal zones.

Specimenmoving Robot Drives Efficiency At

Denver, Colo. (PRWEB) May 17, 2012

Rosie is the kind of helper every hospital laboratory seeks. Always agreeable, never taking coffee breaks or chatting with fellow workers, Rosie works up to 24-hours per day delivering specimens to testing cells at the Self Regional Healthcare central lab in Greenwood, S.C.

Rosie, affectionately named by Self Regional staff, is a RoboCourier? autonomous mobile robot from Swisslog, a leading provider of automated materials transport and medication management solutions for hospitals.

In operation since June 2011, Rosie the RoboCourier is tasked with transporting specimens from the lab?s receiving desk to five testing areas located in rooms separated by narrow hallways.

According to Laboratory Manager Randy Litzenberger, Rosie has provided consistency and improvements in turnaround time. ?Before the robot, we were trying to get 75% of specimens from collection to reporting within 75 minutes,? he explained. ?After we installed the robot in combination with other automation, we saw collection to reporting times drop to 50 minutes 90% of the time.? Before RoboCourier, staff members were walking an equivalent of seven miles per day delivering specimens.

RoboCourier contributes to lean process improvements by increasing efficiency, maximizing operations and improving flow. RoboCourier features human-like voice commands that notify staff of its presence. Laser guidance assures avoidance of people and objects.

Additionally, RoboCourier can interface with automatic doors along its route. The robot can operate 24 hours per day between battery recharging. It requires no facility modifications during installation, and its route can be quickly mapped and modified.

?RoboCourier?s benefit is tremendous where a lab strives to achieve turnaround consistency, where people move specimens that could be handled by a robot,? Litzenberger added. ?The robot is a silent partner helping staff members get their work done.?

Logicalis Asks Which Villains Are

Farmington, MI (PRWEB) May 15, 2012

Summer is almost here and IT managers know the big blockbuster they want to see is a way to better control resources in their data centers. Logicalis, an international IT solutions and managed services provider, has seen some well-meaning IT staffers don capes and masks to deal with cooling and heating challenges in their data centers instead of seeking more practical and permanent solutions. The solution provider has compiled a list of the five most common Data Center Villains in an attempt to help data center managers recognize them and choose better options for managing their data center resources, including managed services and cloud computing.

?Data center professionals are struggling with budgets and resources while fighting ongoing data center challenges like superheroes,? says Bob Mobach, practice director, data centers, for Logicalis. ?Unfortunately, they may fall victim to the very challenges they are attempting to avenge.?

Top Five Data Center Villains

Often the data center villains start out as well-meaning IT staffers who quickly fall prey to the technology challenges they are facing, rather than seeking outside assistance.

1.Mr. Over Cool. This well-meaning data center avenger, when confronted with server overheating challenges, simply adds computer room air conditioners and air handlers (CRACs and CRAHs) to the data center instead of looking for other lower-cost environmental solutions.

2.Doc OctoCable. When things need to be connected in the data center, this villain runs cable, lots of cable everywhere and anywhere it appears to be needed without looking at a structured cabling solution.

3.25-8. Managing a data center can become overwhelming, causing some staffers to attempt to work 25 hours a day, 8 days a week.

4.ITIL Get Done. Lack of proper ITIL processes, such as change, incident, problem and service-level management can become a self-replicating and difficult-to-manage data center villain.

5.The Fireman. A frequent villain that IT staffers see in the mirror is the one racing around the data center putting out technology ?fires? instead of developing revenue-generating IT strategies for their organizations. ?This is by far the most common and difficult to capture villain,? says Mobach.

Logicalis recommends that data center managers and staffers consider their top priorities and devise a strategy for achieving them that includes managed services and cloud computing which can have an almost immediate impact on their IT budgets and provide refuge from data center villains.
